More and more – and more – firms are offering telecommuting options to employees. What was once a wholly unique benefit provided by few employers is quickly becoming the standard. And yet, I find time and again, that there are some companies that not only do not offer any options in the way of telecommuting, who hurt their chances of hiring new recruits simply because this increasingly common benefit is not provided, but are adamantly against it. I’m not talking about all companies everywhere. It would be tough for construction workers or school teachers to telecommute. Some professions simply require a physical presence at the work site, or in the classroom, or even in the office. But when it comes to many consulting engineering and architecture design firms in the design/build industry, telecommuting is certainly feasible. And beneficial. It is widely seen as a preferred benefit, one that, as an executive search consultant, I’ve found to go a long way toward winning over recruited candidates. I’m not saying let everyone work from home all the time and shut down your offices – though, believe it or not, there are firms doing just that – but look at controlled approaches to offering telecommuting in appropriate doses, and stay with, or ahead of, the curve when it comes to attracting top-talent professionals.
