The Air Force has awarded a contract valued up to $330 million to Balfour Beatty Communities LLC to privatize military housing at four bases in the Western United States.

Balfour Beatty will privatize the housing for a total of 3,264 families at Beale Air Force Base, Calif.; F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyo.; Malmstrom Air Force Base, Mont.; and Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo. The contractor currently manages housing units on nine other Air Force bases, including Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Under the recent contract, the Air Force will lease 1,330 acres of land to Balfour Beatty for 50 years and convey 4,047 existing housing units to the contractor. Balfour Beatty will build some 700 new homes and renovate another 2,000 homes. Balfour Beatty is required to maintain at least 3,264 housing units for military families during the 50-year period. Balfour Beatty is based in Newtown Square, Pa.

The Air Force Center for Engineering and the Environment (AFCEE), located at Lackland in San Antonio, is managing the contract. AFCEE is responsible for managing Air Force housing privatization efforts worldwide.
