Description: Sponsored by the AIA Connecticut Committee on the Environment and the Connecticut Green Building Council. With the explosion in projects seeking some type of “green” certification, building products and materials have struggled to catch up with market demand. This has led to Greenwashing in the marketing of products and has created a new challenge for the design team. As the number of green projects has grown, multiple product certification systems have been developed to fill the need for product assurance.

In this seminar, Ross Spiegel, FAIA, LEED AP BD+C will review the different certification systems currently available and describe how to use these systems to identify products and materials that will assist your projects in achieving certification.

Ross G. Spiegel, FAIA, LEED AP BD+C, is the author of Green Building Materials: A Guide to Product Selection and Specification (third edition, November, 2010), which has been called “an essential tool for designing environmentally friendly buildings.” He is an Associate and Senior Specification Writer with the architectural / engineering firm Fletcher-Thompson, Inc., where he creates written construction documents as well as establishing technical standards and processes. Ross is also responsible for the LEED Certification process on Fletcher-Thompson projects and leads the firm’s Green Team. Ross is actively involved in the AIA, the Construction Specification Institute (CSI), and the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).
