California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) was founded as a vocational high school, which opened its doors in 1903. In 2011, U.S. News & World Report ranked the school sixth among regional universities in the West.

The School of Architecture and Environmental Design offers a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering and a Master of Science in Architecture with an architectural engineering specialization. Cal Poly’s architectural engineering programs combine theory with practice through design labs, hands-on practical training and research opportunities.

2. Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, IL
Illinois Institute of Technology is a private, urban university that enrolls 7,707 students annually. The institute maintains a student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1, providing students with individualized attention and instruction. The university was ranked 78th by U.S. News & World Report among best graduate schools for best engineering schools in 2011.

The Armour College of Engineering offers programs in civil, architectural and environmental engineering through the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering. Students can earn a Certificate in Architectural Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering or a Master of Architectural Engineering.

3. University of Colorado in Boulder, CO
In 2011, U.S. News & World Report ranked the university 39th on its list of top public schools. The architectural engineering program is offered through the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

The Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering offers a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering. The program educates students in basic math and science, building design, electrical analysis, design integration and lighting engineering. Students may concentrate their studies through advanced coursework and internships. In addition to the bachelor’s program, graduate coursework is also available in lighting systems, architectural lighting design and design development.
